Dear Hartem families and community members,
I am honored to be principal of the Hartsburg-Emden School District. I have 18 years of experience in the education field. I was born into a family with 2 wonderful parents who were also educators. I have worked the majority of my career as a science teacher in Peoria-Pekin area schools. My previous administrative experience was as an assistant principal at Manual High School in Peoria. One thing that I have learned from all of my educational experiences is that students are unique and each one has different needs. Given the right environment and support, every student can be prepared for a successful and productive life.
I have had a wide range of experiences that I bring to the district. I have a degree in Cellular and Structural Biology that prepared me to be a science teacher. I graduated from Illinois State University with a Biology Education Degree and Western Illinois University in Educational Leadership. I learned a lot of construction and home improvement skills from my dad who was a contractor when he wasn’t teaching school. I played golf for 4 years in high school. Although I didn’t start very much, I played on the University of Illinois rugby club. I shot trap, skeet and sporting clays at the national level with the University of Illinois club team.
In my time at home, I have a very supportive wife and 3 energetic children. We enjoy our time outside playing in the yard, fishing, biking, and listening to music. We look forward to using our new camper and exploring some parks in Illinois very soon.
I have enjoyed serving in my first year. It is my goal to help give our students the best education to prepare them for college, the workforce, military, or any path they choose. I also encourage students to be problem solvers, life long learners, and pillars of the community.
The Hartsburg-Emden community has many great traditions and the Junior High and High School building just turned 100 years old. Many families have been in the area for multiple generations. The school district and community definitely has something to offer with so many returning families.
I hope that you find this website useful. If you feel like there is any information that is missing or needs to be available, please feel free to contact us. If you have any questions or concerns about your students, I am available to discuss. I hope that all of the students have a great year and reach all the goals that they set for themselves.
Thank you,
Cory Brown
