Taken from a history written by Lyndon R. Westen - Class of '66

"Through 21 presidential administrations, 8 decades, and 4 generations this honored school district has educated, nurtured, and challenged Hartsburg-Emden's sons and daughters while playing a major role in guiding, shaping, and molding the character and personality of these communities.

Hartsburg-Emden High School is not merely a structure of wood, steel, brick, and mortar. It is a vibrant, thriving institution that very clearly defines what each of us were, who each of us are, and what all of us can and should be.

As you stroll along the second floor "hallway of fame" where pictures of fathers and mothers gaze lovingly and proudly down upon their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, no one can doubt that this unquestionable is hallowed ground.

Prior to 1920, school district students who saw the necessity of continuing their education past the tenth grade were forced to commute to other schools/towns in order to do so."
